This past Sunday, September 13th, the children of Augustana got to experience the first day of Godly Play — a new spiritual formation program that takes an experiential approach to learning. Godly Play is a program not centered around the classroom, but instead about immersing children experientially in the symbols and stories of the Christian faith.
“It went as well as it possibly could have,” Vicar Adam was happy to report, with the kids being “locked-in” throughout the lesson. (With only a few small, excited interruptions, as is to be expected.)
The Circle of the Church Year was the first topic covered, with children listening to a story and then being invited to engage further with a set of “I wonder” Questions. Such as, “I wonder where you’ve seen these colors before?” and “I wonder which is your favorite color here?” which the kids happily pondered, with answers from everyone over the course of the discussion.
Parents are invited to a little bit of Godly Play themselves this Sunday, September 20th at 9:45am when Pastor Matt will be hosting an orientation of the program and tour of the Atrium.
