Notes on Today’s Service
Thank you to this week’s lector, Dorothy Pytel. Padraig McGuire served as both videographer and cantor, and Pastor Nancy Goede presides.
Our guest preacher this morning is Bishop Yehiel Curry, from the Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Bishop Curry was elected June 8, 2019 to serve a six-year term as bishop. Previously, from 2013-2019, he served as pastor of Shekinah Chapel Lutheran Church, where he also served as mission developer from 2007 to 2012. In 1995, he received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Lewis University and the Master of Divinity degree from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 2013. He and his wife, LaShonda, are the parents of three daughters.
We continue to hear stories from the Hebrew Scriptures that are not normally in the lectionary, stories that may be unfamiliar to us. Our First Reading, from Samuel as re-told by Sandol Stoddard in the Doubleday Illustrated Children’s Bible, tells the story of God instructing Samuel to choose a king for Israel and his selection of Saul.
During the Pandemic
During this time of isolation and separation, it is especially important that we all receive (and read) our weekly emails from Augustana, to know what is going on, and to connect. If you are not receiving the emails, your email program may be putting them in a ‘promotions’ folder. If you are not receiving or can’t find them, contact the church office (office@augustanahydepark.org)
You can arrange an ongoing, electronic offering through our website by visiting our Donation page. Setting up a free PayPal account allows you to make an offering of any size with a debit or credit card; the email address you need is treasurer@augustanahydepark.org. You can, of course, send a check to Augustana, 5500 S. Woodlawn Ave., Chicago, IL, 60637.
We encourage you to share the Peace of Christ with your neighbors by calling them, e-mailing them, or reaching out through Facebook.
