For our celebration of Christ the King Sunday, Cantor Padraig McGuire put together a performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria by an expanded version of the Augustana choir, featuring violinists Elizabeth McCreless and Caroline Wooten.

Antonio Vivaldi wrote at least three settings of the hymn Gloria in Excelsis Deo, whose words date back to the early church and the 4th century setting of the Ordinary Mass. The version sung on Christ the King Sunday was RV 589, a widely popular version that Vivaldi composed in 1715.
Vivaldi, a Catholic priest, wrote Gloria while employed at La Pieta in Venice, an orphanage that provided an extraordinary education to students with musical aptitude and helped raise funds through its choirs’ performances of sacred music.
Thank you to Padraig, Elizabeth, Caroline, and the Augustana choir!
