I recently came across an interesting and thought provoking article by Douglas Sean O’Donnell, PhD, author and senior vp at Crossway. I am not posting his entire article here because of copyright issues, but rather encourage you to follow this link and read his brief article directly.
In sum, O’Donnell makes the case for liturgical worship, the kind of worship we practice at Augustana, in four points:
- Liturgy offers us words to pray when our own words seem insufficient or absent
- Over time, the regular use of familiar prayers and creeds shapes our thoughts, words and actions
- Liturgy joins us to the global and historical church
- Regular patterns of scripture, confession, and prayer develop holy habits
