Palm Sunday – the Value of Liturgy

Palm Sunday is a reminder for us that children – and those of us who can shed our adultness for an hour and be like a child – love liturgy well done.

We gather in the fellowship hall, take a palm frond, and process together, joining with Christians across the world in honoring Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, at the beginning of the week that will result in his execution and lead to the joy of Easter resurrection. The palm branch had, before Jesus’ time, come to represent victory, triumph, peace and eternal life. By entering Jerusalem on a donkey, Jesus contrasted his Kingdom of God with the Roman Empire and their processionals on war horses. Finally, when we reach the narthex, we will enter the Nave to All Glory Laud and Honor, a triumphal entry, but with the knowledge that Jesus’ triumph is quite different from the empire’s. We don’t just know, but actively participate in all of these layers of meaning and remembrance in our Palm Sunday processional.

Join us for Palm Sunday at 8:30 and 10:45 am and experience the power of liturgy in our lives.
