Sunday, November 20, is Pledge Sunday, Augustana’s annual invitation to participate in the financial giving ministry of the church. We really do see it that way. God has blessed us in so many ways, so as stewards, we share some of those blessings for ministries beyond our own household. We grow spiritually as we grow in giving.
The years of pandemic were a challenge for our community. Some of our households were faced with job loss and income loss, and cut back on their giving. At the same time, others increased their giving. Why? Because “if one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.” (1 Corinthians 12:26) Augustana has come through challenging times with a renewed strength – missionally, financially – because we are doing it together.
Together, this autumn we celebrated a joyful Season of Baptism as we baptized three infants, one teenager, and one adult. Together, we welcomed an additional seven new members into our community through Affirmation of Baptism and collectively affirmed our own baptisms. Some of our youngest members are enjoying having a nursery again, and we all enjoyed the return of Octoberfest with Bruce’s Brats.
Our previous outreach ministries have restarted and new ones have sprung up. Our monthly Community Breakfast has returned, and the Keith Cooper Fund was launched this summer. We have taken initial steps towards sustainability through the formation of a Green Team. As a congregation, we have fostered a community of welcome and hospitality for students through Lutheran Campus Ministry; this autumn, we have seen upwards of 20 students gathering for worship and dinner on Thursday evenings.
Follow this link to find the online pledge form and make your commitment for 2023. Pray over the commitment you will make and consider it carefully. There are also paper pledge forms at church, and during our worship service on November 20th, the whole congregation will be invited forward to place our commitments before the altar. If you make your commitment online, you can use the paper form in the bulletin on Sunday, check the ‘already pledged’ box and bring it forward. In any case, please plan to bring your commitment and help the congregation present our offerings, together!
Thank you, for your commitment to the work of God we do together, and for your participation in the community of God’s people that is Augustana Lutheran Church. We are the church, together!
Yours in Christ,
Nancy Goede, Parish Pastor, and Matthew Stuhlmuller, Campus Pastor
