If you’re looking for a way to serve in the community, these are possibilities at Augustana and with our space partners:
Community Breakfast
Augustana has a monthly Community Breakfast on the third Saturday of each month. The volunteer coordinator is Rachel Nielsen, rsniel@gmail.com. Volunteers are needed at 8am to cook and set up, at 9am to serve and at 10pm to clean up. Of course, breakfast is included.
The Love Fridge
UChicago students who would like to volunteer for a week of work with The Love Fridge in front of Augustana can contact Sarah Hoehn,sarahhoehn1@gmail.com. You can also volunteer to help keep the Fridge clean and supplied through The Love Fridge mutual aid group, thelovefridge.com. There are guidelines for donations on the site.
Green Team
Augustana’s Green Team works on a number of fronts, including a current project to install solar panels on our church roof. They organize trips to the forest preserves to tackle projects like prairie restoration, and they sponsor programs about environmental education and advocacy. They hold periodic workdays in the gardens around the church, and are always looking for volunteers who would like to work outdoors. Contact Elizabeth Roma, emhroma@gmail.com, to join their email list.
Hyde Park Refugee Project
The Hyde Park Refugee Project is always looking for volunteers. Go to their website at hprpchicago.org to find out what opportunities they have available at the moment.
The Hyde Park Village
The Hyde Park Village is dedicated to helping older adults remain independent as long as possible. You can find out about current volunteer opportunities at chpv.org. One way to serve is to help older people navigate the electronic world at Tech Cafe, chpv.org/techcafe.
