Augustana Lutheran Church of Hyde Park

This week, Augustana and many other congregations will begin to use the new NRSVue translation, which stands for “New Revised Standard Version updated edition”, a successor to the NRSV translation. Our primary resource for creating Augustana’s worship materials, Sundays & Seasons, has moved entirely to NRSVue.

The NRSVue reflects discoveries of ancient texts and new insights made in the 30 years since the NRSV was last revised. It offers clearer, more direct, and inclusive language, and increased cultural sensitivity absent of the unintended biases of prior versions.

Friendship Press calls the NRSVue “the world’s most meticulously researched, rigorously reviewed, and faithfully accurate English-language Bible translation.”

The revised common lectionary is the book with all the readings for a three year cycle – Augustana’s sits on the ambo or lectern. Augsburg Fortress, the Lutheran publishing house, is not yet printing or selling a new, complete lectionary with the NRSVue translation, apparently there are not enough of us who use a physical lectionary to justify the expense. For now, we will print out the readings for our lectors and pastors to read from on Sunday mornings, as we see what Augburg decides to do, as well as explore other options.
