Christian Nationalism and Christian Zionism have been in the news a lot recently, because they are driving much of current U.S. policy, both domestic and foreign. Everyone, religious or not, should be familiar with these interlocked movements in order to see current events in their full context.
In Lent, there will be opportunities to learn about both movements, starting with a presentation on Christian Zionism by Robert O. Smith. Robert was our campus pastor from 2005 to 2007; now he is a professor of history at University of North Texas and the author of More Desired than Our Owne Salvation: The Roots of Christian Zionism (Oxford, 2013).
Robert will be with us via Zoom on Wednesday, March 19, at 6:30pm CST. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84830962562?pwd=728I7yjQoJ8FewhIlzuQlSsYFnl1sV.1
Two weeks later, Shanta Premawardhana will lead a presentation and discussion about Christian Nationalism. Shanta is the president of OMNIA Institute for Contextual Leadership, which trains religious and civil society leaders in eight countries to form Interfaith Peacemaker (IP) Teams. He is working to build a team in the United States that is looking at ways to counter Christian Nationalism. Previously, Shanta worked for the World Council of Churches in Geneva, and before that he was the pastor of Ellis Avenue Baptist Church here in Hyde Park.
Shanta will be with us via Zoom on Wednesday, April 2, at 6:30pm CTS. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84901797943?pwd=Ao0Hz9d39KwVqiF91cYnbXJwbAqqrk.1Â
Please come not only to learn about the past of these movements, but to prepare to respond to them in the future.
