Hexaemera – Six Days of Creation

Beginning September 8, 2024, at 9:45 am, Steve Barrett will teach the Adult Forum around the theme of thinking nature. Professor and church member, Willemien Otten, has written the book: Thinking Nature and the Nature of Thinking: From Eriugena to Emerson (Stanford 2020). She will join the class in November to discuss her book. In September Steve will explore a practice he learned from Otten’s book: hexaemera. Hexaemera literally means six (hexa-) days (mera), the six days of creation. Hexaemera are sermons, commentaries, and treatises written by scholars on the six days of creation according to Genesis. Steve plans to look into the hexaemera of St. Augustine, Maximus Confessor, John Scottus Eriugena, and the contemporary Episcopal theologian, Katherine Sonderegger. There is a great deal of material and only four 45 minute sessions, so Steve will share word.docs through email. If you are not on the Adult Forum’s email list, you can send your email address to Steve at stevebaustx@gmail.com.
